Exhibition in the Alvar Aalto pavilion at the Venice Biennale in Architecture 29.8.–25.11.2012.
The inaugural exhibition in the newly restored Alvar Aalto pavilion, New Forms in Wood, showcased the innovative use of wood by the young generation of Finnish architects. Contrary to the usual setup, the structure of the wooden pavilion was left exposed, revealing the experimental character of the building originally designed as a temporary exhibition space by Aalto in 1956. This solution created an excellent context for highlighting the historical continuum between Aalto’s open-minded approach and the work of the new generation. The fresh combination evoked positive interest among the international media.
Museum Director Juulia Kauste acted as the Curator and Commissioner for the exhibition. Esa Vesmanen and his Pure Design team designed the architecture for the exhibition. Design of the exhibition followed the principles of the “Common Ground” theme outlined by the curator David Chipperfield. The exhibition design was lightweight, sustainable and durable. Special care was given to the structure of the wooden furniture and the lighting of the exhibition to respect the architecture of Alvar Aalto. New Forms in Wood was organised by the Museum of Finnish Architecture. The exhibition was supported by Finland’s Ministry of Education and Culture, World Design Capital 2012 and Saas Instruments.
